Department of Welsh
We are a well resourced department and have a long history of good results at GCSE, A/S and A level.
We have five members of staff in the department:
- Mr D.J. Jones
- Mr P. Rees
- Mrs D.M. Clement
- Mrs P. M. Griffin
- Miss H.L. Alexander
Year 10 and 11
All students have the opportunity to study Welsh either as Full Course GCSE or Short Course GCSE both of which lead to a recognised accredited qualification.
Year 12 and 13
Students study Welsh to A/S level in year 12 and A/2 level in year 13.
Our students have an opportunity to attend courses at Nantgwrtheyrn National Language Centre where they have the opportunity to improve their oral skills in a real life Welsh language environment. They also make cultural visits while at the centre.
The Eisteddfod
The Eisteddfod is an integral part of school life. All Departments set competitions throughout the year, which contribute to the points earned by the winning house. The Eisteddfod is the culmination of a year’s hard work by staff and students.
Awards are given for a wide variety of activities including modern dancing, folk dancing, singing, instrumental competitions and recitation, to name but a few.
The centrepiece of the Eisteddfod is the Chairing Ceremony, where the winning poets in Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 are presented with awards for the best poem.

Year 7, 8 and 9 have the opportunity to attend weekend courses at the Urdd Centre. They improve their language skills but also go swimming, go-carting, horse riding and dry slope skïng.
ACCELERATED CLASS FOR YEAR 6 STUDENTS
For three years we piloted an accelerated Welsh class for 30 students who spent 6 weeks at our school at the end of year 6 in improving their Welsh in cross-curricular activities.
This course has now ended. However, as a development, we have launched a new Welsh language transition project in partnership with our feeders schools.
For the next two years, staff member Miss Alexander will work with all our feeder schools, both infant and primary to develop the language. Our hope is that all students with then take their Welsh GCSE examination in Year 9. This will enable them to study the Welsh element of the Welsh Baccalaureate in Years 10 and 11.
