The Department of Mathematics

Our Mathematics department is made up of an established and enthusiastic team of eight specialist teachers. The department is very well resourced with plenty of textbooks, equipment and two interactive whiteboards.

Each member of the department has their own teaching room with their own textbooks, set of calculators, overhead projector and other equipment. The department teaches across the whole ability range from year seven to year thirteen.

At Key Stage 3 students are taught in banded groups in year seven, years eight and nine are set according to their mathematical ability within each half year group.

At Key Stage 3 in years 7 and 8 we use the Key Maths Scheme whilst our year 9 students embark on the G.C.S.E. course.

We have purchased ‘Maths Alive’ which is an interactive package that is used with all our key stage groups. Our students really enjoy working with ‘Maths Alive’ and this has added a new dimension to our classroom teaching.

At Key Stage 4 we follow the W.J.E.C. specifications. We use a number of different textbooks including:

  • ST(P)   series of books, G.C.S.E. Maths by Jean Holderness.
  • 'Key Stage 4 National Curriculum Mathematics Series' written by the W.J.E.C. examiners.
  • G.C.S.E. Mathematics for W.J.E.C. published by Hodder Murray.

At Key Stage 5 we have large classes studying both AS and A2 level. We follow the W.J.E.C. modular ‘A’ level course with all students studying pure mathematics, statistics and mechanics.

At A2 level we have an excellent record of results with many students achieving grade A. We provide ‘resit’ classes for sixth form students who did not achieve a grade C or better first time.

We enter students for the UK Mathematical Challenges and we take part in ‘Fantasy Football’. The department run many revision workshops at all key stages at the end of the school day.

As a department we work together as a happy, successful and united team and as a consequence of this we have a good record of examination results.
