Department of Leisure Studies

The Leisure Studies course encourages the student to develop broad skills, knowledge and understanding of the leisure industry. It will prepare students for further study, or training in the leisure industry and related occupations.

The course is composed of two parts. The first part is the Advanced Subsidiary (AS), which can either be followed as a single AS or doubleAS qualification. Students studying this course will complete 3 units or 6 units.

The second part of the course is the A2, which can be studied after completing the AS level course. The A2 units and assessments will be more demanding than those in the AS. Again, students studying the course will complete 3 units or 6 units.

The units studied will be a mixture of both theory and practical work. Students will develop an understanding of current issues, working practices and procedures of the leisure industry; develop an understanding of the benefits of a healthy and active life style. They will also develop an understanding of the importance of the customer to the leisure industry.

One of the most enjoyable units is where the students have to organise an event. Previous students have organised a themed dinner for students and staff at the school. The school had “Elvis, Snow White and Scooby Doo” arriving for the meal!

HOW THE COURSE IS ASSESSED

The work is continuously assessed through coursework portfolios, which will include projects, presentations and practical work. Grades from A – E are awarded depending on the quality of the work produced. Certain units are externally assessed.

ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

Minimum requirements for this course will be 4 GCSEs at grade C or above.
