Department of Law

Law is a recent addition to the extensive list of subjects that can be studied in our school. In 2008, for the first time, students will sit a GCSE examination. The course provides an excellent basis for the future study of the subject, covering the following areas:

  • The nature of law in society
  • Freedom under the law
  • Protection of rights
  • The courts and personnel of the law
  • Sources of English law
  • The prosecution process
  • The civil process
  • Contract, tort and family law
  • Criminal law

Of course, not everyone taking GCSE Law will necessarily want to continue with the subject later on, though if they do, it is possible to study AS and A level Law.

Even if they do not, Law is still a worthwhile course in terms of general education and life-long learning. It will encourage you to develop a capacity for critical thinking and for making judgements and arguments based on evidence. In addition, it helps you to keep up with current affairs and to have a better understanding of many of the stories in the news.

This subject is taught by Mrs P. Davey, who has a Law degree and is a lay magistrate and Mr P. Hall who has considerable experience teaching History and Politics.

Students will gain a broad-based, practical knowledge of how the law works , which will fit in well with a wide range of subjects, both academic and vocational in nature.
