Department of History
There are three full time members of staff in the department:
Curriculum Co-ordinator Mr P. Hall, Miss H. Bowen and Miss L. Margery. Some of the special needs history classes are also taught by Mr G. Richards.
Years 7, 8 and 9
At the very beginning of Year 7 we start the Key Stage 3 course by looking at some of the skills we need to develop in history, before going on to study the history of the Middle Ages.

In Year 8 we concentrate on the Tudors and Stuarts, and in Year 9 we cover the last 250 years of history, from the Industrial Revolution up to the present. Where relevant we will bring in elements of Welsh history e.g.
- the conquest of Wales and the building of Welsh castles
- the ascent of Henry VII – a “Welsh” king
- the coal industry the Rhondda
- public health in Wales in the 19 th. century
Years 10 and 11
At Key Stage 4 the GCSE course is split into four modules, each designed to test different history skills:-
- Hitler’s Germany 1919 – 1945
-
Health and Medicine since the Middle Ages
- Sport Leisure and Tourism during the 20 th. century
- Coursework – two essays on 20 th. century history
Key Stage 4 Students take part in Remembrance Service
Years 12 and 13
At Key Stage 5 the course is also split into modules - six in all – covering a range of time periods and skills, both in British and European history.
For a number of years members of the department have run after school sessions to help students to complete their GCSE and A Level coursework. If the marks achieved by students are anything to go by, these have been a great success.
We have also fostered links with the community via the Ark Project. In 2004-5 our GCSE students met with local pensioners to discuss their reminiscences of the war years. Four students then made a CD Rom and went on to win a national award. In 2005-6 we linked up with local miners.

Our hope is to continue to develop these links in the future.
