Department of English
English at our school is taught by an enthusiastic team of well qualified specialists who understand the importance this Core Subject plays in improving the further education, career and life chances of our students.
We are committed to providing a balanced range of activities that fulfils the requirements of the National Curriculum whilst also meeting the individual needs of students in our community.
English is a huge subject: its scope ranges from the development of basic grammar to the production of detailed portfolios of written work; from reading simple stories to research projects and thorough critical studies of classic works of Literature.
Students can expect to engage with the ideas of others and will be encouraged to express their own opinions in writing and speech. In short, English is about the most fundamental and crucial of skills: the ability to communicate.
We work to help our students in this area by providing a nurturing, positive and challenging environment.
We make use of information Communication Technology, to broaden the appeal of our subject and to take advantage of the benefits of modern technology. We work in partnership with the well stocked School Library to give students the opportunity to research, develop interests or simply to read for fun.
As part of our commitment to helping students develop we regularly organise school trips – particularly to the theatre, often using such experiences to support the study of a text in class.
English at Porth is one of the most exciting, useful and rewarding areas of study students will experience.
