Department of Drama

Who are we?

Our department has two full time subject specialist teachers – Mrs J D Williams (Curriculum Co-ordinator) and Miss R Griffiths.

What do we teach?

Drama is taught to all students in Key Stage 3. Students can then opt to take our subject as an options subject in Key Stage 4. At Key Stage 5 students are offered Performing Arts and Drama and Theatre Studies as options.

At Key Stage 4 we follow the WJEC specification for Drama, which includes devised and scripted performances, the study and analysis of two set texts and a live theatre performance review.

At Key Stage 5 we follow the EdexcelSpecification for Performing Arts, which includes skills development, music and study of the working industry.

At Key Stage 5 we follow the Edexcel Specification for Drama and Theatre Studies, which includes the study and analysis of set texts, scripted performances and performance analysis.

How do we teach Drama in our school?

 Our lessons are a balance of practical, design and written work covering topics from mask-making and set design, to script reading, script writing and ensemble role-play. Our scheme of work aims to interest and provide all students with engaging activities that also help to develop basic skills and theatrical skills.

Events in the Drama Department include:

· Theatre visits

· Workshops and performances by Theatre groups visiting the school

· After school Drama clubs

· School productions

Why learn about Drama?

 Drama will help students to:

· Develop communication skills

· Learn about the history of Theatre

· Develop teambuilding skills

· Gain confidence

What use is a qualification in Drama?

 Drama is a qualification that many prospective employers, colleges and Universities respect because it shows the student has the abilities to work within a team, has self-control and is a motivated learner.
