Department of Careers

Our Careers and Work Related Education Programme provides exciting opportunity for our students to prepare for life after school.

Through following a structured careers programme in addition to participating in a range of world of work activities, our students receive a mix of school and work based learning, enabling them to gain an understanding of the types of skills, qualities and attitudes needed to succeed in today’s workplace.

Working in partnership with a range of outside agencies and local employers we ensure that all of our students are entitled to:

  • Careers lessons from Year 9 –13 (delivered on a fortnightly cycle)
  • Opportunities to undertake work experience in Year 11 & 12
  • Impartial advice relating to needs and aspirations from our school careers adviser
  • Access to the careers library
  • A career plan
  • A full ‘World of Work’ programme including: Compact, Work Matters, Work Visits, Sustainability Challenge, Exploring Business, Enterprise in Action and Mock Interviews.

Goals relating to attendance, punctuality, behaviour and
meeting deadlines are set in a programme called Compact

Local employers working in partnership with Mid Glamorgan Education Business Partnership (EBP) devised the programme in hope that students would understand the importance and necessity of such qualities to succeed in
today's workplace.

Every student works towards achieving high standards in these goals and if successful are presented with a Compact certificate at the end of the school year.

In addition to Compact, EBP provide fantastic support to
the Work Related Education programme, using their extensive business links, they help ensure students experience a range of business and enterprise activities both inside and outside of school.

Within our department we encourage our students to use a range of Information Communication Technology packages to assist them in their career planning. The Internet is a major research tool - the Careers Wales website (www.careerswales.com) along with the University and Colleges Admissions Service (www.ucas.ac.uk) allows our students access to the latest student news, advice, interviews, entertainment and much much more!

Our students can also explore over 1800 career titles and match career interests to possible jobs using other computer packages such as ‘Kudos’.

There are four staff involved in the delivery of Careers: Mrs McCarthy, Mr Rees, Miss Hurley and Mr Nash.

Please contact us if you would like to find out more about Careers and Work Related Education at our school.
